WRC NEWS - Abramowski shines on world debut to lead WRC3 in Estonia

- Jul 18, 2025-

Tymoteusz Abramowski made a commanding start to his FIA World Rally Championship career on Friday by storming into the WRC3 lead on his Delfi Rally Estonia debut.

The 19-year-old Pole, currently leading ERC3 after three victories in the European series, brought that form with him to the world stage - setting fastest times on each of the opening three stages aboard his Ford Fiesta Rally3.

Estonia is a familiar hunting ground for Abramowski, having started his rallying journey in the Baltic country, and he wasted no time settling in. But his charge nearly came undone in SS4 when a rock impact caused significant rear-right suspension damage and cost him 25 seconds.

Quick work in midday service kept him in the game, and Abramowski responded in style - clocking two more stage wins in the afternoon to end the leg 1min 5.5sec clear of Takumi Matsushita.

Driving a Renault Clio Rally3 as part of Toyota's TGR-WRC Challenge Programme, Matsushita enjoyed his most competitive day of the season so far - including two stage wins and a consistent pace that kept him clear of the chasing pack.

Grzegorz Bonder completed Friday's top three but trailed Matsushita by nearly two and a half minutes. Peru's André Martinez was the only other driver to make it through the day trouble-free.

The championship standings could see a major shake-up following a brutal morning for several key players. With series frontrunners Taylor Gill and Matteo Fontana absent this week, Kerem Kazaz and Arthur Pelamourgues had a prime opportunity to close the gap - but both ran into early trouble.

Kazaz, mentored by former WRC star Teemu Suninen, sustained nearside damage after brushing a tree on SS3. Although he completed the morning loop, further inspection at service revealed roll cage damage and forced a precautionary retirement.

Pelamourgues, winner of January's Rallye Monte-Carlo, fell victim to deep ruts in SS4. The Frenchman's Clio was left stranded and he too was sidelined for the remainder of the day, though he is expected to restart on Saturday.

There was no such luck for Bolivia's Nataniel Bruun, who rolled his Fiesta in SS2, or Bermuda's Igor Bulantsev, who also rolled n SS1. Both were classified as retirements, although Bulantsev is targeting a restart.

Shotaro Goto's day was nothing short of a rollercoaster. The Japanese driver rolled on SS2, went third-fastest on SS3, claimed a maiden stage win on SS4, then exited the rally with suspension damage after striking a rock in SS5.
